Apple Watch Ultra is certainly an extraordinary device. During the September premiere, the manufacturer promised that diving enthusiasts would be provided with a special update, thanks to which the watch will be able to act as a diving computer. The company keeps its word.

Oceanic+ App for Apple Watch Ultra

The Cupertino giant has confirmed that users of the most expensive version of this year's smartwatches have just received a new feature. It allows recreational divers to use the watch while diving, even at a depth of 40 meters. All thanks to the update and release of the Oceanic + application and the capabilities of the smartwatch, which has a depth gauge and a water temperature sensor on board.

The Oceanic+ app, which is also downloaded to the iPhone, allows you to view key data on the watch that helps you understand the circumstances of the dive, and after returning to the surface - analyze the individual parameters of the activity.

The application also includes a planner that allows you to prepare for the descent - specify the time on the surface, the depth of the dive, and the gas mixture used. On this basis, the application will calculate the no-stop diving limit, i.e. the time that can be spent at a given depth. The planner also takes into account conditions relevant to divers, such as tides, water temperature, and even information shared by other divers about current transparency and currents.

Hardware Preparation

Because the Apple Watch Ultra has earned a WR100 water resistance rating and EN 13319 certification, which is the global standard for the quality of diving accessories, including depth gauges, it can be used as a (non-professional, but still) replacement for the dive computers that deep-sea explorers are used to.

Interestingly, the Apple smartwatch takes care of the implementation of the appropriate feedback signal. Well, the watch can send the user a tactile signal in the form of a series of vibrations that can be felt underwater on the wrist even through 7 mm thick foam. In this way, the diver will not be confused by the beeping sound emitted by the companion's computer.

Additional options are paid

The Oceanic+ app for Apple Watch Ultra is available for download from the App Store starting today. Requires an Apple Watch Ultra with watchOS 9.1 paired with an iPhone 8 or later or iPhone SE (2nd generation) with iOS 16.1. The basic version of the application is free and provides access to the main diving features, including depth and time data and the ability to save recent dives. However, if you want to have additional functions, you will have to reach for a wallet.
