Last September 30, US EV giant Tesla unveiled a prototype of the bipedal walking robot "Optimus" at the event "AI Day" being held by the company. Optimus announced at AI Day in August 2021 that it would "show a prototype in 2022", and although it was postponed from the original August, it fulfilled its promise within 2022.

A prototype of Tesla's bipedal walking robot "Optimus". Optimus is a robot that incorporates Tesla's car-making know-how and is uniquely designed by Telsa, from the brain chip "Tesla SoC" to the battery pack, actuator, and control system.

The chip is a Tesla original. Can be connected to Wi-Fi or LTE. The finger joints of the hand operate independently, and the thumb also has two degrees of freedom. Optimus can also carry objects and use human tools. Actuators are consolidated into 6 types while trying to standardize joints. The actuators used in the legs are powerful enough to lift a grand piano.

In the demo, you could pull a cardboard box off a shelf and deliver it to an office worker, hold a watering can to water flowers, or transfer parts to a cart inside a Tesla factory. Utilizing the AI technology cultivated in autonomous driving, it realizes accurate walking route creation from the depth map captured by the camera and high-precision manual operation.

It is said that in September 2010, he changed to his current walking style with his toes separated. In addition, the demonstration of bipedal walking was carried out with the internal mechanism visible. A version with the exterior attached was also shown, but this was released with the stand fixed.
